Company History

L. Mason Capitani is the oldest locally owned and operated real estate service firm specializing in the sales, leasing and management of industrial, office, medical and retail properties in Michigan. Founded in 1965 by Mr. L. Mason Capitani, what was once a one-man operation has evolved into what is now a full service brokerage firm with geographic coverage that extends throughout Michigan and beyond.

The firm’s history can be traced back to Detroit’s east side in the mid 1960’s. Originally specializing in the construction and management of industrial properties, Mr. Capitani began to concentrate his efforts on the brokerage side of the business by the end of the decade. When his son, Mason E. Capitani joined the firm in 1973 they formed a team that would begin to dominate Detroit’s industrial real estate market. In the years that followed, Mason E. Capitani took his father’s business to new heights, expanding the firm’s geographic market coverage and building an organization known for its dominance in industrial brokerage throughout the Detroit area. 

The family tradition continued in 1996 when Jason E. Capitani joined the firm as an agent specializing in industrial brokerage. Two years later Mason L. Capitani joined the firm as the director of the company’s newly established Office Properties Division. Today, as principal members of the firm, their responsibilities have grown to include the oversight of the firm’s brokerage and management operations, the recruitment and training of new sales associates and the daily management of the firm’s business activities. They are also working brokers, intimately involved in many of the firm’s major projects.

In addition to traditional brokerage, L. Mason Capitani offers a full array of property and asset management services through our property management arm, Liberty Property and Asset Management.  The principals of Liberty Property & Asset Management offer over twenty five years of experience in all aspects of managing commercial properties.  The many services offered by Liberty Property & Asset Management include physical property maintenance, accounting and financial reporting, valuation, coordination of real estate tax appeals, construction management, receivership, lease audits and lease administration.  Our property management and brokerage professionals collaborate regularly to provide a high level of service to our clientele.

The firm’s geographic reach extends well beyond Michigan’s borders through our affiliation with CORFAC International. Established in 1989 as a non-profit association, CORFAC International is a network of independently owned commercial real estate firms with locations around the world. CORFAC firms annually complete more than 9,000 commercial real estate transactions, encompassing a half billion square feet valued each year in excess of $30 Billion. Our CORFAC affiliation provides L. Mason Capitani with a platform to serve our client’s real estate needs on a geographic basis that extends beyond the Michigan borders and around the globe.

With a mix of diverse mix of experience and youth, the staffs at L. Mason Capitani and Liberty Property & Asset Management have developed a reputation for being diligent, ethical and hard working.  In fact, many of our professionals hold prestigious industry designations including the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors (SIOR), Certified Commercial Investment Manager (CCIM), International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) and Building Owners and Managers Association International (BOMA) designations. Each individual professional within our organization strives to be an expert in their given specialty and geographic territory. Our business philosophy is firmly based on developing and retaining client relationships, some of which date back to the company’s inception.
